The UCIMC is proud to host the personal collection and archive of Barbara Vogl, donated by her estate in 2009. The American Society for Cybernetics recognized Barbara Vogl for outstanding contributions to the nurturing of cybernetics.

Countless people have benefited from the experience of Barbara Vogl's curiosity and invitations. Among her many achievements, Barbara was the editor of the newletter, Patterns. Her vision of cybernetics and systems theory for the masses, her unrelenting and creative pursuit of the unusual, and her keen sense for recognizing new connections made Patterns a rich source of tools and concepts to practice committed engagement with and within the social world. As editor, her unassuming, yet probing, interview technique illuminated ideas and people who would otherwise remain unappreciated.
Recognizing her warm demeanor, inquisitive personality, dedication, and innumerable contributions to the cybernetics community, the American Society for Cybernetics made a Special Award to her in March of 2009. While Barbara had a special interest in the practice of the "spiritual", it was her spirit that consistently caught people's attention and imagination. We are grateful for her contributions, which will surely inform new ways of thinking for years to come.
Materials in the Barbara Vogl Cybernetics Archive are in the process of being cataloged. The collection will be available for use at the UCIMC, but also on this site as a digital archive in the coming months.
